Adams was born and raised in Castle Rock Colorado, as the youngest of seven children. Her father was in U.S. service in Italy. In the mid-1990s she began professional dancing and acting in Boulder's Dinner Theatre and the Country Dinner Playhouse in Colorado. Then she moved to Minnesota and was cast in Drop Dead Gorgeous, a documentary mock film that focused on beauty contests. After moving to Los Angeles, she pursued acting as a profession following her film debut, in which she portrayed an uneasy but fun contestant. She was the wife of actor Tony Curtis from June 1951 to September 1962 and the mother of Kelly Curtis and Jamie Lee Curtis. Her film career started in the late 1940s when she was accepted by MGM. She had been discovered by Norma Shearer. She appeared in a range of films that became popular over the following decade, such as Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (from the year 1960) as well as Living It Up (1954) which starred Martin Lewis.
